This week we decided to pull some of our favorite machine guns out of the safe and film a quick video to show you a little more about them. We have four Swiss made SIG SG 550 series firearms. That’s right, these are Swiss made machine guns. We have two SG 551-2 SWAT, and a sequential set of SG 552-2 Commandos.

Check out our video and catch the whole review, and a range test! Continue reading to see some still photos of the guns.

The SG 550 series were adopted by the Swiss Army in 1990. They replaced the older SG 510/Sturm Gewehr 57. Mainly because they wanted a firearm that was lighter and easier to carry. Just as a reference, the SG 510 is 12.5 lbs, while the SG 550 is 9 lbs, SG 551 is 7.2 lbs, and the SG 552 is 6.6 lbs.

These SG 550 rifles are a closed-bolt long-piston driven weapon similar to an AK. They have ambidextrous fire selectors with four different modes, including safe, semi-automatic, three round burst, and fully automatic. Each model also includes a folding stock.

The SG 551 was specially designed for urban missions and close combat. It has a 13.6" barrel with adjustable diopter sights with four different settings, 100m, 200m, 300m, and 400m.

The SG 552 is considered a short-barreled rifle, with a barrel length of 8.9". This model is also the shortest in the SG 550 lineup. It has low-profile flip-up sights with a picatinny rail for mounting optics.
