Meet the New Civilian Legal MP5K: The HK SP5K!
Posted by Branden on May 6th 2019
Heckler & Koch’s (HK) SP89 is among one of the rarest roller-delayed weapons brought into the US by the company. HK had a short run of the SP89 from 1989 to 1994 before it was banned from further importation by name in a Clinton executive order. Well, the SP89 is back and updated after a 20+ year hiatus; welcome the SP5K.
The SP5K is the next iteration in the closest that one can get to owning a civilian-legal MP5K. There are some great clones on the market, but this is the real deal. The SP5K isn’t standard fare for the average pistol customer. It’s aimed at folks who want to have a piece of history in their collection. It was first introduced in 2016, and is almost identical to the MP5K except for a few changes to make it compliant with U.S. law. It’s semi-automatic only and the forward handguard does not have a vertical foregrip.
The SP5K retains many of the critical features of the MP5, including its precision machined components and attention-to-detail quality. The SP5K is manufactured completely in house at Heckler & Koch’s Oberndorf factory in southwest Germany. The SP5K is designed to meet the definition of a civilian pistol and marks the return of the roller-delayed blowback system to an HK commercial product.
