I purchased my Ruger American Ranch Rifle in 2015 and absolutely love it! The rotatry style magazine is quick and easy to load and has never given me any problems. At first I was a little concerned about accuracy at longer distances with having such a short barrel but that concern turned into "Damn I'm IMPRESSED!" When me and two friends consistently hit a 12"x 12" steel plate at 500 yards at the Parma Rod and Gun Club and shot 1/4-1/2 inch groups at 100 yards. It is my absolute go-to gun for coyotes and other varmints and is always in my scabbord when pushing cattle or riding fences. The action is still as smooth as the day I got it with no less than 1,000 rounds shot through it, a true testament of Ruger's reliability, dependability, and built to last. I have owned many different rifles over the years but Ruger has proven to be one of the best.I know this isn't the best as far as review standards go, I just wanted to throw my two cents in for whatever it may be worth to someone considering adding this rifle to their collection.

I've read many reviews on different gun dealers websites with respect to this firearm. I took most of them with a grain of salt feeling most came from novice gun owners buying their first gun. I grew up with a gun in my hands, since I was age 5, and have enjoyed shooting for over 60 years.

This is not the first Ruger rifle I have owned, and could not believe it is a piece of junk. I bought this American ranch rifle, and have thoroughly inspected it. It is of the high quality Ruger is known for.

Some of the complaints were about the magazine. I worked this magazine over and over again, and have found no problems with it, and it has never failed me. It does take a few minutes to figure out how it works, then it is easy.

Some complained the Picatinny rail was loose. I checked it on my rifle, and it was tightened down tight. Now, that doesn't mean one might leave the factory with the Picatinny rail loose, but an experienced shooter would check to make sure it was tight, before mounting a scope. If a shooter was to complain he couldn't shoot good groups, because the rail was loose, only has one person to blame. HIMSELF!!

Some complained about the rough feel of the bolt, and I agree it does feel a little rough right out of the box. I took a very small amount of "Rig Stainless Steel Lube" and wiped it all over the bolt, especially in the bolt groove and bolt lugs. I made sure I wiped off all the excess lube the bolt leaving a very thin coating of the lube to fill in any pours in the metal, as I do all the bolts of my rifles. The bolt cycles like glass.

Since this rifle is so short, I anticipate some muzzle jump, so I have ordered a muzzle brake to compensate.

Don't get down on Ruger rifles, because of some novices writing bad things about this rifle. I have a Ruger Model 77 heavy barrel Varmint in 223 cal., which will shoot a group the size of a dime at 100 yards ( time after time ). You can't ask for a better rifle than that!

I've read several complaints about the magazines on these American Ranch rifles. Complaints about them not loading properly. Complaints about them getting stuck, and not cycling a round into the chamber.

I bought one of these American Ranch Rifles, because I have faith in Ruger, and the quality of their rifles. I figured the complaints came from first time gunowners, who didn't know what they were doing.

It does take a few minutes to figure out how to load the Ruger magazine, but that is not a big deal.

I would suggest you tap the magazine on the back of the magazine on a hard surface just as you do any magazine to seat the cartridges to the rear of the magazine.

I, also, suggest you pull the bolt all the way to the rear to make sure it is at the rear of the magazine and catches onto the next cartridge. The bolt has to catch the back of the next cartridge to feed it out of the magazine into the chamber.

I know gun experts know this, but novices don't. Once the previous expended cartridge ejects, the novice might think he can chamber a new cartridge. He can't! He must continue to draw the bolt all the way to the rear, until it stops, then move it forward to chamber a new cartridge.

Tapping the magazine moving the cartridges to the rear will prevent hangups inside the magazine.
