Manufacturer Number:
36 Black Powder
Unit of Measure:
To fill increased demand by the civilian market for pocket pistols, Colt designed scaled down versions of its popular 1851 Navy and 1860 Army revolvers. The 1862 New Model Pocket Revolver, or Pocket Navy, was chambered in .36-caliber and retained the Navy's octagon barrel and conventional loading lever. The 1862 New Model Police, also chambered in .36-caliber, was a miniature 1860 Army with a slightly modified fluted cylinder. As Colt's last open-topped percussion revolvers, many were converted to fire cartridges and manufactured by Colt as cartridge revolvers through the 1870s.

    A great little 5 shot

This is my absolute favorite cap lock pistol. There are no practical reasons I like it I just do. It's a 5 shot compact .36 and has no real value for anything other than plinking. The grip is a little small so big handed patrons beware. Besides it's size it's pretty much just as good a pistol as it's larger colt counterparts. The parts are smaller but are all the same no change in design or function they just shrunk an 1861 Army. It is surprisingly easy to load, the smaller cap locks often need a piece of pipe to add leverage for loading. This one doesn't. The actual percussion caps can be a little hard to push on, I like to use the flat side of a flat head screwdriver. Accuracy isn't bad but the ball starts to wander after 5 yards or so. The gun was meant to be used in a similar manner that we use stub-nose revolvers, close range self defense. Considering the time frame and technology 5 yards in a pistol like this seems pretty good. If you are crafty you might get a rabbit or a squirrel out of this little guy. Mostly I just think it's a lot of fun. If you are a first time buyer of cap lock pistols I?d recommend finding out more information about them, there are additional safety rules and considerations when shooting a cap lock pistol.
