The Knight's Manufacturing Company (KMC) Modular Weapon Systems (MWS) is based on M16 Series carbines and rifles and H&K rifles and submachine guns. The modular weapon configurations illustrated on this web site feature weapons equipped with "Picattinny" Rail upper receivers with removable carrying handles. Weapons with standard upper receivers may also be updated to modular weapons. The MWS features an innovative forend rail assembly, the Rail Interface System (RIS), which replaces the factory handguards of the host weapon. The RIS features four mounting rails (configured to MIL-STD-1913) located in four quadrants at 90 degrees around the barrel, allowing for attachment of weapon enhancing accessories.
The RIS alone also provides excellent thermal protection. In a test designed by the U.S. Army to compare the carbine variant RIS to the standard carbine handguards, the RIS provided superior thermal protection to the shooter's hand as well as superior barrel cooling.
The variety of accessory combinations greatly enhances the tactical flexibility of the baseline weapon. Tactical flexibility is achieved through allowing the user to quickly custom tailor his weapon to changing situations/environments. The MWS is currently providing elite military units and other users the versaltility needed to postpone the obsolescence of current service weapons well into the 21st century.
The Modular Weapon System (MWS) represents ten years of research and development and adds flexibility and adaptability to a proven rifle design. the MWS has just been adopted by the U.S. Army and type classified.
